Joel Nitikman, dojo leader
Yodan (4th degree black belt)

Joel Nitikman walked into the UBC dojo on Monday, September 16, 1985. It is appropriate that Joel remembers his exact start date, because he is known for his organisational skills, and therefore he has been an instrumental leader at the UBC dojo since 1989, when he became a shodan. In 1995, Joel and Liny Chan were awarded the Canada West regional award for their dedication to the organisation. This tradition has continued, for he was also a key organiser for the Canada Shotokan 25th anniversary celebration.

Joel has had the opportunity to go to many international events, such as Harmony 1990 and Israel Shotokan's 25th anniversary, and also to visit Waseda University and to participate in Nisei week, where he was a member of the first place Canada West team in 1995. He has also practiced in many dojos throughout North America. These experiences, along with the support of his seniors, especially Don Gee and Norman Welch, have been very important to Joel.

In September 2003, Joel became the official leader of the UBC dojo.
