Marking 50 years of practice in Shotokan Ohshima Karate-dō, Canada Shotokan is pleased to announce that registration for our celebration is now OPEN!
We are grateful that Ohshima Sensei has given us the Japanese character “Wa” (or Harmony) to mark Canada Shotokan’s 50 years of practice, and to guide us in the years to come. See here for a more detailed explanation of this calligraphy.
Our celebration will be held from August 12th to 14th, 2022 in scenic Vancouver, Canada. There will be a Vancouver Harbour boat cruise reception held on Friday evening. Saturday and Sunday will include a tournament, two practices, and a Godan Examination, all at the University of British Columbia. A closing banquet will be held on Sunday evening at the Westin Bayshore Hotel located at the waterfront in downtown Vancouver.
COST
The registration fee for practicing participants is $525 (Canadian Dollars)
The registration fee for non-practicing participants is $450 (Canadian Dollars)
Registration fee includes:
* Friday evening Vancouver Harbour boat cruise reception
* Bus transportation departing the Westin Bayshore Hotel to and from the practices
* Bento box lunch of your choice on Saturday and Sunday (chicken, salmon or vegetarian)
* Closing banquet at the Westin Bayshore Hotel
LODGING
You are responsible for making your own lodging arrangements. You may choose from a variety of hotels offering different price ranges. Please see the enclosed map of downtown Vancouver showing the location of the Westin Bayshore Hotel, which will be our main social venue.

TRANSPORTATION
Vancouver International Airport is located about 15 kilometers from downtown Vancouver. There is a SkyTrain (taking about 20 minutes) from inside the airport to downtown, exiting at the Waterfront Station, which is the station closest to the Westin Bayshore Hotel. See here for the train map and here for further useful information. Taxi and Uber are also available.

Friday August 12, 2022 – Vancouver Harbour
* 12 noon to 4:30 pm – Registration at Westin Bayshore Hotel
* 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm – Vancouver Harbour boat cruise, with drinks and appetizers
Saturday August 13, 2022 – UBC War Memorial Gym
* 8:00 am – Buses depart Westin Bayshore Hotel for University of British Columbia
* 9:30 am – Individual men’s and women’s black belt tournament
* 12:30 pm – Bento box lunch
* 2:00 pm – Karate practice
* 4:30 pm – Buses depart and return to Westin Bayshore Hotel
Saturday evening – free time

Sunday August 14, 2022 – UBC War Memorial Gym
* 8:00 am – Buses depart Westin Bayshore Hotel for University of British Columbia
* 10:00 am – Godan Examination
* 12:30 pm – Bento box lunch
* 2:00 pm – Karate practice
* 4:00 pm – Buses depart and return to Westin Bayshore Hotel
* 5:00 pm – Cocktail reception at Westin Bayshore Hotel
* 6:00 pm – Closing banquet, speeches, and entertainment at Westin Bayshore Hotel
