At the annual Black Belt Convention in California, Roland Duval from Shotokan Karate Ottawa dojo is recognized as 1987 Canada East Member of the Year.

At the annual SKA/CSK Black Belt Convention, the following Canada Shotokan members are recognized:
- 1986 Canada East Member of the Year: Jocelyn Bourdeau from Joliette dojo
- 1986 Canada West Member of the Year: Alan Kazuta from North Delta dojo
Norman Welch (CSK) and Ron Thom (SKA) establish the Goodwill Cup tournament, an event to foster the close relationship between karateka in the Pacific Northwest. The highlight of the tournament is a 5-member team competition between the University of BC and the University of Washington. Each dojo will take turns hosting the tournament. This event will symbolize the friendship and camaraderie that members in the Pacific NW share through practice.
Canada Shotokan members, along with members from SKA and Israel Shotokan, travel to Japan to practice at Ohshima Sensei’s Alma Mater, Waseda University, to celebrate the Waseda Karate Club’s 55th Anniversary. The celebration includes practices, demonstrations and a tournament. Canada Shotokan/SKA members compete in a tournament with the Waseda karate club members.
