Yasunori Ono began karate practice at Waseda High School. He became captain of Waseda University Karate Club in 1967. The year before (1966) he was All Japan Student Karate Federation Champion. In 1967 he won 2nd place.
When Ono Sensei graduated in 1968 he visited Ohshima Sensei in Los Angeles. In 1969 he visited Toronto where he met Norman Welch. Ono Sensei introduced Norman to Ohshima Sensei which led to the formation of Canada Shotokan Karate in 1972. Ono Sensei has visited Canada Shotokan Karate on numerous occasions. He continues to aid in the development of Canada Shotokan Karate.
